Confidence, where have we lost it?

Updated: Apr 9

Time and again, in my coaching, I’ve observed women struggling with confidence. It gets shaken for various reasons, negative self-talk often being a common factor.

Last week, I was coaching someone grappling with her confidence at work.

I asked her how she felt, and she said, “Small”

After discussing what made her feel that way, I asked, “You realize that you allowed yourself to feel small?”

She replied, “Yeah. It was my foolishness.”

First, we make ourselves small, then we call ourselves foolish. Self-deprecating comments have somehow become the norm. No wonder, our confidence takes a hit, and it’s not pretty!

There’s no judgment here — I was there too, not too many years ago. And I have seen it with others, in different forms.

But here’s what I learnt: 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.

Speak to yourself like you would speak to a friend.

Instead of saying “It was my foolishness”, try saying “I was not aware, but now that I am, I can change”

When we are kind to ourselves, Confidence will naturally bloom, because it’s already within us. We just need to let it shine again.

Please allow me to say this out loud. WE WERE NEVER MEANT TO BE SMALL.

Let us stop making ourselves small by putting ourselves down.

I have reclaimed my confidence and seeing others reclaim it too is immensely rewarding for me.
